GEF Council, its principal governing body, meets twice annually to develop and approve policies, programs, and funding for projects in key areas including biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, chemicals and waste, and sustainable forest management.

The Council consists of 32 members: 14 from developed countries, 16 from developing countries, and two from economies in transition.

But today, it faces an escalating crisis—one that endangers not only the ecosystem but the health, heritage, and hopes of millions. What was once a symbol of purity and prosperity is now tainted by negligence, industrial greed, and a lack of awareness.

The Indus is no longer just a river—it’s a mirror reflecting the environmental decay of an entire nation.

Unfolding Disaster: What’s cause of Indus River Pollution?

From the snow-fed streams in the north to the delta in Sindh, Indus River pollution poisons the water at every turn. The causes are many—and each stems from human carelessness and a lack of strict enforcement of waste disposal regulations.

1. Sewage Without Treatment

Countless towns and cities dump untreated household waste directly into the river. Without proper sanitation infrastructure, bacteria, viruses, and organic pollutants enter the water, creating a breeding ground for deadly diseases.

In a compassionate initiative to provide relief during the harsh winter season, the Sindhica Reforms Society has distributed free duvets (locally known as سور) among widows from poor families in Jam Sahib a district of Shaheed Benazirabad.

This charitable act was made possible through the generous donation of Dr. Tauseef Chowdery, a dedicated philanthropist committed to supporting community welfare projects.

As winter temperatures drop across Sindh, many widows from underprivileged backgrounds struggle to stay warm. Without adequate resources to purchase winter essentials, they become vulnerable to cold-related illnesses.

Recognizing this pressing need, the Sindhica Reforms Society organized a free duvets distribution drive to extend a helping hand to these vulnerable women.

Dr. Tauseef Chowdery, whose generous donation facilitated this initiative, emphasized the importance of aiding marginalized communities, particularly widows who often face economic and social hardships.

“We have a moral responsibility to support those in need, especially widows who are among the most vulnerable. I am pleased to contribute to this cause through Sindhica,” he remarked.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan — August 16, 2024: The resurgence of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has captured widespread attention as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reports two new cases, raising Pakistan’s total to three confirmed infections. The latest cases were detected among travelers returning from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to the KP Health Department.

Immediate Response and Investigation

Health officials have initiated urgent measures in response to the new cases. “The patients are currently in quarantine, and further tests are underway to identify the specific strain of the virus,” stated Salim Khan, Director General of Health Services for KP. The third case, still under confirmation, has had samples sent to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Islamabad for further analysis.

A 34-year-old man recently returned from a Gulf country and was admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. The diagnosis confirmed the presence of the Clade 2b strain of mpox.
