Mpox Cases Reemerge in Pakistan Among Travelers from the Gulf
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan — August 16, 2024: The resurgence of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has captured widespread attention as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reports two new cases, raising Pakistan’s total to three confirmed infections. The latest cases were detected among travelers returning from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to the KP Health Department.
Immediate Response and Investigation
Health officials have initiated urgent measures in response to the new cases. “The patients are currently in quarantine, and further tests are underway to identify the specific strain of the virus,” stated Salim Khan, Director General of Health Services for KP. The third case, still under confirmation, has had samples sent to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Islamabad for further analysis.
A 34-year-old man recently returned from a Gulf country and was admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. The diagnosis confirmed the presence of the Clade 2b strain of mpox.
The patient showed symptoms shortly after arrival and was isolated at PIMS as a precautionary measure. The Ministry of National Health Services later confirmed the diagnosis, leading to increased monitoring and preventive measures to contain the virus.
Global Mpox Situation
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a severe mpox outbreak has claimed over 500 lives, with 15,664 cases reported since early 2024. The outbreak, driven by the Clade 1b variant, has spread to twelve African countries since late 2022, causing global concern.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak in Africa a public health emergency, with more than 27,000 cases and over 1,100 deaths reported. Most fatalities have been among children, emphasizing the virus’s severe impact on younger populations.
Global Health Response
Paul Chaplin, CEO of Bavarian Nordic, highlighted the urgent need for expanding vaccine access to children, given their increased risk. His company is seeking European approval to extend monkeypox vaccinations to those aged 12-17.
In response to the evolving threat, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has raised its risk level for mpox from “low” to “moderate” following the detection of a more contagious Clade 1 variant in Sweden. This strain, linked to the outbreak in the DRC, has heightened concerns about potential imported cases across Europe.
Pakistan’s Preparedness and Vigilance
The recent cases in Pakistan, all linked to travelers from the Middle East, have prompted the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) to issue new directives. Enhanced screening and testing protocols are now in place at airports and entry points to detect and contain potential infections.
Despite no new variants being identified in Pakistan, health officials are closely monitoring the situation. Genetic sequencing of the virus is underway to provide insights into the strain involved in the recent cases. “We expect results soon, which will guide our next steps in containment and treatment,” said Sajid Shah, spokesperson for the Health Ministry.
The Importance of Vaccination
Vaccination remains a crucial tool in controlling mpox and other infectious diseases. By introducing weakened or inactive parts of a pathogen into the body, vaccines stimulate the immune system to recognize and fight future infections. This not only protects individuals but also contributes to herd immunity, preventing community-wide outbreaks.
Recent advancements, such as mRNA technology, have enhanced our ability to respond to emerging threats rapidly. Vaccines have been instrumental in preventing millions of deaths annually from diseases like measles, polio, and influenza, reinforcing their importance in global health efforts.
Moving Forward
As Pakistan navigates this new mpox challenge, health authorities continue their efforts to prevent the virus’s spread. With the international community also monitoring the situation, global cooperation remains vital in addressing emerging health threats.
